The industry? Kelp harvesting.
The Duxbury Conservation Commission issued a permit to a kelp harvester in Duxbury.
The farmer recently relied on two cranes in Plymouth harbor that are owned by local lobstermen/fishermen. These cranes have 500 lbs and 600 lbs capacities. The ideal kelp harvest is 1000 lbs. The farmer was forced to leave a 26’ refrigerated truck overnight at the wharf.
To attract more kelp harvesting, Plymouth would need to invest in a crane with a 1,000 lbs capacity and cold storage units at the waterfront. Saugus recently received a significant investment from the state to build cold storage on the Saugus River.
Seems to me that the purchase of a crane and grant request for cold storage funding is a worthwhile investment of money and time to become a player in a $14 billion industry.
